I consider myself to be a documenter of the times in which I live, much like a photojournalist, I attempt to capture what the prevalent winds blow. I present issues that, if seen from an objective standpoint, seem completely incongruent with that which is preached by those in power. My goal is to neither persuade nor dissuade anyone: rather, I wish to open the gates of discussion surrounding these issues so that meaningful dialogue can replace archaic sound bites. In previous series I have focused on same sex relations, America's misinformed perspective and vilification of all Muslims, as well as our nation's Quixotic fascination of Intelligent Design.
Currently, I am exploring the tumultuous love affair that American's are having with Big Pharma. I find it fascinating that this country has been engaged in a "war on drugs" for almost 30 years now, yet in 2006, 227 million antidepressant prescriptions were dispensed in the United States alone, accounting for 66% of the total global market. This series, entitled "Meaning and Nothingness" examines how our society, within 40 years, has gone from one that imbibed an evening cocktail to unwind, to one that needs a morning, afternoon, and evening cocktail of pills to cope with the daily grind.
However, at the end of the day these ideas are merely "actors" in a bigger stage production. It is really the set and the obsessively ornate design of said set that truly captivates me. I create sumptuous fields of dots for these "actors" to inhabit, thus seamlessly incorporating both my conceptual and visual concerns.
